Empowering the Next Generation of Accounting and Finance Leaders
TRN had the honor of being part of something truly special—an event that was both inspiring and impactful for everyone involved. We were invited to present at the University of Nebraska Omaha’s Beta Alpha Psi Power Dinner, a gathering designed to bring together the brightest minds in the fields of accounting and finance. As a company that thrives on fostering early-career talent, this was an exciting opportunity for us to engage with the next generation of professionals, share valuable insights, and offer mentorship to those ready to take their next big career step.
The Power Dinner is more than just an event—it’s a platform for students to connect with industry leaders, learn from their experiences, and gain the knowledge needed to navigate the rapidly changing world of accounting and finance. We focused our presentation on Mastering the Transition from Student to Professional, as we know this phase can be one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, moments in any career. We were eager to share how students can not only navigate but also thrive during this critical transition.
Mastering the Transition from Student to Professional: Key Insights
At the heart of our presentation was a conversation about the evolving landscape of the accounting and finance industry, and the skills needed to thrive in this fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
One of the key points we discussed was the importance of adaptability. The financial world is continuously transforming—whether it’s through new technologies, changing regulations, or shifts in the global economy. As we shared with the students, adaptability isn’t just a nice-to-have skill—it’s essential. The ability to embrace change and grow with it will be the difference between a career that feels stagnant and one that flourishes with new opportunities.
We also dove deep into the role of emotional intelligence in professional success. While technical skills are critical in accounting and finance, we believe that emotional intelligence—such as self-awareness, communication, and relationship-building—is just as important, if not more so. Understanding how to navigate workplace dynamics, work with diverse teams, and communicate effectively with clients and colleagues will elevate any early-career professional and set them apart.
Real-World Experience and Mentorship
Perhaps the most rewarding part of our presentation was the chance to share personal experiences and lessons learned along our own career paths. We discussed how mentorship has played an integral role in our own success and how students can seek out mentors who can help guide them through the uncertainties of early career decisions. We encouraged the students to think of mentors as partners who can offer wisdom, encouragement, and insight during both their successes and setbacks.
One of our TRN team members shared a powerful story about the early years of their career and the unexpected hurdles they faced—and how those moments became defining parts of their professional journey. They shared this piece of advice with the students: “It’s okay not to have all the answers at the start. What matters is your willingness to learn, grow, and adapt as you move forward.”
The students responded with energy and enthusiasm, asking thoughtful questions that demonstrated their desire to grow not just as future professionals but as individuals ready to make an impact. The energy in the room was inspiring, and it was clear that the future of accounting and finance is in very capable hands.
