How to Excel in a Data Entry Job

Post by:The Reserves Network February 28, 2019April 9, 2024

Data entry is a field that has been around as long as computers have existed, but over the decades, the nature of the work has changed significantly.  If you’re looking to enter the field, here are the things you need to know so you can excel in a data entry job.

What is Data Entry?

Data entry covers a wide variety of jobs including data processing, information processing, typists, word processors, transcribers, coders, clerks and more.  Data entry professionals can work in an office or they may work remotely from home.  Excellent touch typing skills and experience with common software programs are required for most data entry jobs.

Data entry professionals input alphabetic, numeric or symbolic data into a company’s computer system. Some operators simply enter the data, while others may be required to verify data or edit it before it is entered. The data being entered can come from a variety of sources from handwritten documents to forms to audio files.

How To Rock A Data Entry Job

Speed and accuracy are the keys to success in data entry. Almost every job will measure success by how quickly you work and the number of errors you make.  This means that you must be able to work well under pressure and have keen attention to detail.

When working on your data entry resume, focus on these key metrics, as they will be of the most interest to hiring managers:

  • How fast you can type both, alphabetically and numerically;
  • Your error ratio.

Highlight these at the top of your resume, so the hiring manager doesn’t have to scour your resume for this critical information.

A Word Of Warning

Many data entry jobs are advertised online as work-from-home opportunities. This is appealing to a number of people – especially people with families. However, scams run rampant in this field, as well as extremely low pay rates. Unfortunately, some companies take advantage of the fact that people are looking for jobs with freedom and flexibility.
