We’ve all heard of the 7-year itch in relationships. But what about the 3-year itch in careers? Have you hit a moment where you start feeling restless, unmotivated, and are thinking about jumping ship? You’re not alone. Let’s break down what this 3-year itch really is, why it happens, and how you can shake up your career instead of shaking it off.

What Exactly is the 3-Year Itch?

To sum it up, the 3-year itch is the point where you are unsatisfied with your job. You may feel stuck, uninspired, and ready for a change after three years in the same place. It’s when the honeymoon phase of a new job has faded, and the daily grind feels more like, well, a grind. But why does this happen? 

Why the 3-Year Itch Happens

Unfortunately, there isn’t a simple answer to this. But, generally, this happens to anyone who feels like they can’t grow beyond their current role.

  • Stagnation Sucks. When you’re not growing or learning new skills, it’s easy to feel bored. Lack of advancement can make your job feel like a dead end. 
  • Craving Fresh Challenges. Doing the same thing day in and day out can get old—fast. After three years, you might be yearning for new projects or responsibilities to sink your teeth into.  
  • Burnout is Real. Constant work demands with little support can lead to major burnout. When this happens, everything feels much harder than it needs to be. Your job satisfaction, and your productivity, takes a hit. 
  • Leadership Letdowns. If your managers aren’t supportive, or the company culture is toxic, it’s no wonder you’re feeling the itch! Leadership and company vibes play a big role in how happy you are at work. 

Turning the Itch into an Opportunity

Instead of thinking about this three-year itch as sign to quit, reframe it. See this as the perfect change to grow within your current job! Here’s how: 

Reflect and Reassess

Use this time to think about your career goals. What have you accomplished in the last three years? What skills do you want to develop? Are there new opportunities within your company that align with these aspirations?

Seek New Challenges

Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you! Ask for them by talking to your manager about new projects or even moving into a different department. Proactively shaping your role can reignite your passion for your job.

Leverage Your Resources

Many companies nowadays offer mentorship programs, career development opportunities, and regular check-ins with leadership. Use these resources to discuss your career, your dissatisfaction with your job, and get feedback to help you reorient.

Embrace Change

Looking for ways to evolve in your current role, whether through new responsibilities, different projects, or team changes, can be a great way to scratch the three-year itch without losing your job. Remember why you took the position to begin with. Have you maybe just forgotten why you love the job while feeling inundated with the mundane?

Turning Restlessness into a Career Win

Please don’t hear what we aren’t saying! If the company you’re working for is unhealthy, and your physical or mental health is taking the brunt of that burden—don’t stay in your current job! Sticking it out in a toxic environment can be detrimental to your well-being and career growth.

However, if you’re simply feeling dissatisfied, running towards growth and new opportunities could be the perfect fix. 

The 3-year itch doesn’t need to be a dreaded phase in your career! Embrace it as a natural checkpoint to reassess, grow, and find new ways to stay engaged and motivated.
